Australian producer Lucas King is proving that compelling electronic music can emerge far beyond the major-city club circuit. Based in Edenhope, a small town in Western Victoria, King has built his sound through years of musical exploration, moving from drums and guitar to bands, hardware-based production and eventually the limitless possibilities of the DAW.
His journey began at around 12 years old, when he first picked up the drums. Guitar followed soon after, and by grade nine he was already performing in bands and writing original music. With limited opportunities to connect with musicians after relocating to a smaller town, King took matters into his own hands, becoming a self-contained creator who recorded and performed his own material.
That rock-rooted background remains an important part of his artistic identity. While his current focus is electronic dance music, traces of heavier music can still be felt in the attitude and emotional weight behind his productions. King gravitates toward slower grooves, generally operating between 90 and 125 BPM, but refuses to be restricted by genre rules.
His latest track, “Vulpes,” was created during one of his intense waves of inspiration. Working quickly and trusting his instincts, King avoids overthinking the process, allowing the track to retain an immediate, expressive character.
